This research review examines the research into residential childcare undertaken since the Second World War and summarises the main approaches adopted over the years in relation to the institutional care of children. The review distinguishes between studies conducted before 1975 from those of more recent origin. It identifies the varied theoretical dimensions to residential care and identifies research gaps.
