The paper examines issues that can arise with family placements in view of the part that substance misuse may play in the wider family system and the impact of parental substance misuse on attachment and child development. Some practice issues are explored and it is argued that such placements demand a specific type of support and monitoring if children's welfare is to be safeguarded.
