The author was himself a persistent truant at school and now lectures in education studies and is currently researching truanting. Arguing from what he calls a 'truantist perspective' Southwell contends that current understandings of the issue are 'confused' and that truancy might be more usefully understood 'in relation to unmet educational needs', through which perspective truancy can become 'a valuable indicator tool'.
