in-house workshops

E-mail Print PDF

2011-2012

Each Partner agency is entitled to two days of in-house support. There are a range of ways in which these days can be used to support you to embed evidence-informed practice depending on the topic, staff group and aim that you identify.  You can discuss the options available to support you with your priorities with your Regional Lead.

In-house workshops – you provide the room and we provide the learning

As part of this we can run half-day workshops on the following topics. These workshops are designed to support the development and delivery of evidence-informed practice within your agency. Each workshop is open to a maximum of 25 people. We will come to your agency to deliver the workshop.

To maximise the use of this offer, you may wish to invite us to your agency for a full day to deliver two workshops on the same topic to a greater number of staff.

To request a workshop for your staff on a particular topic please contact your Regional Lead.

If you would like research in practice to deliver a topic, other than those listed below, or have any other specific requests or requirements, please speak to your research in practice Regional Lead.

An introduction to evidence informed practice

This workshop will provide an introduction to what it means to be an evidence informed practitioner. It will include advice on how to keep up-to-date with the latest policy and research and an introduction to the research in practice website. The workshop gives time to audit where you (and your team) are at with evidence informed practice and how to make, often small, but effective changes in your working practice to become an evidence informed decision maker.

Finding and appraising good quality research

How to combat information overload – this practical session will look at how to find research and quickly assess its quality and assess its relevance and applicability to your practice.

Using analysis and critical thinking in assessment

This practical session will introduce the tools and techniques to build analysis and critical thinking into assessments. It will explore the characteristics of a good analytical assessment and introduce the five key anchor principles for good assessment, developed by the research in practice Change Project. The workshop includes a small group session on applying these anchor principles to real cases.

The workshop is for front-line practitioners who want to improve their analysis and critical thinking skills.

Domestic Abuse, its impact and effective interventions

A workshop to promote understanding of the research evidence on prevalence of domestic violence (DV) and the considerations and approaches for service development and a multi-agency approach.

The workshop covers:

  • Identifying risk factors and associations
  • Describing age specific impacts
  • Summarising and grouping approaches to resilience
  • Evaluating contact priorities
  • Recognising the voice of the child and the associated talking and listening methods
  • Developing practice knowledge and application of interventions with children, victims and perpetrators
  • Assessing position within the steps to develop a responsive service
  • A catalyst for discussion, sharing good practice and networking

This workshop is for participants from across services dealing with DV and child protection. The workshop is an opportunity to develop shared approaches and understanding across children’s services, DV specialist services, refuges and police.

Using research in report writing, assessment and family court

A practical session, where you will learn about using research in report writing, assessment and when presenting evidence in court. This workshop is an introduction for social workers and front-line practitioners who want to boost their skills, knowledge and confidence. The workshop draws on the tools and techniques developed in the research in practice Evidence Matters handbook.

Leading and championing a strategic approach to evidence informed practice

Inspirational and practical, this seminar is for senior/advanced practitioners, assistant directors and heads of service. It will help you to champion an organisation-wide approach to evidence-informed practice and shape organisational policy which nurtures the principles of a learning organisation. This workshop uses tried and tested tools and techniques that have developed from our highly regarded Change Project programme.

Developing an evidence informed team

This workshop, aimed at front-line team managers, introduces the practical, tried and tested tools, developed in the research in practice Teamwise handbook, to help you put research into practice within your team. In this workshop you will:

  • Learn what we mean by an ‘evidence-informed team’
  • Find out about different ways to put research into practice in your team
  • Try out tools and exercises to help with this
  • Identify actions you can take as a champion promoting research use in your team

Using evidence to champion excellence in your team

Based on the principles of evidence informed practice and the characteristics of a learning organisation, and supporting the recommendations from the Social Work Reform Board, this workshop provides practical steps for team managers to support effective first year induction, critical and reflective practice, continuous professional development, appraisal and supervision, within teams.
