Innovation in Reading

As budget cuts hit and the pressures on social care build, it is encouraging to hear about superb innovation from one of our Partners. In Reading, ethnographic research revealed problems with engagement and involvement in their children’s centres, which weakened the ability of the service to help the area – which is noted for its ‘huge deprivation’. In an unusual approach, ideas were offered by the families themselves, and included:

  • Ways to make the centres welcoming
  • More parenting support from peers
  • Opportunities to make changes in community
  • More chances to support each other
The research provoked wider thought and debate, and has led to a hugely innovative idea, to move the power from professionals to parents. A summary of this approach can be found here and a more detailed document Shifting the Balance is included here also.
